Looking for a fresh way to play Commander without creating a new format? Have you considered swearing “The Oath”?
What is “The Oath”?
The Oath is a new way of customizing your Commander Deck without sticking to whacky format restrictions. You can still play in normal Commander games with players not “Swearing the Oath” and still remain relevant to the game!
The Oath involves doing the following:
- Purchase one of the new Commander 2016 decks and sleeve it up 100% unnchanged.
- Play a game!
- If you lose the game, you may change 2 Non-Land Cards and 1 Land Card from the stock deck.
- If you win the game, you cannot change any cards from the list.
- Play some more games!
The Oath is just that simple!
The purpose of The Oath is to limit the power-level of your deck and force you to play new or interesting strategies without relying on the same stock Commander cards over and over. While this is more of a “Gentlemen’s Agreement” sort of situation, it makes for an interesting challenge as well as ultimate bragging rights between other Oath members, as players attempt to win games without having to change too many cards in their deck.
To truly test your Oath skills, try to avoid these Degenerate Cards in your decks as you progress. These cards are by no means banned from use within the challenge, however consider this the “Hard-Mode Challenge” of the Oath:
White
Blue
Black
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
- Necropotence
- Rise of the Dark Realms
- Sepulchral Primordial
- Kokusho, the Evening Star
Red
Green
Land
Stay tuned to the blog, as we will be posting up results and progression lists from certain players within the Oath to see how different players change and evolve their decks throughout the challenge.
We’ve sworn the Oath, have you?
I swear the oath! I don’t own many of the so-called Degenerate cards anway, so I’m going for the challenge. Should be interesting.
