What I&#8217;ve got for you today is the first article in a series designed to help folks break into the Modern format. \u00a0We&#8217;re going to be looking at decks that can be built on a pretty tight budget, focusing on fringe decks that can take down an FNM for a player that wants to try something different, or slightly budgetized Tier 1-2 decks to help a newer player build up to a top tier Modern deck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our focus today is on one of the scariest decks in any format in which it&#8217;s legal, Infect. \u00a0Infect has been around in Modern for a while and it had a breakout performance at Pro Tour: Fate Reforged. \u00a0The U\/G list utilized then has changed very little since the pro tour and can be found pretty easily. \u00a0We&#8217;re going to start with a Mono-Green version, that can be built over time into the more resilient U\/G version that&#8217;s been consistently finishing Top 8 at Grand Prixs and SCG Opens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Creatures:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5448 alignright\" href=\"http:\/\/theendgamesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mutagenic-Growth.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mono-Green Infect deck is a lot less\u00a0vulnerable to burn decks than it&#8217;s two color counterpart because of the lack of a fetch\/shock manabase. \u00a0There are a lot of ways to quickly upgrade this deck, and we&#8217;ll touch on some of those at the end of the article. \u00a0For now lets take a quick look at some of the different things we&#8217;ve got happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Creatures \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ve chosen the 12 most efficient infect creatures available to us in a mono green deck. \u00a0<\/span><b>Glistener Elf<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes down turn 1 and allows for sur<br \/>\nprise turn 2 kills, \u00a0<\/span><b>Ichorclaw Myr<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is incredibly\u00a0difficult to chump block, and <\/span><b>Blight Mamba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> really doesn&#8217;t want to die.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5451 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/theendgamesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mutagenic-Growth-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mutagenic Growth\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>The Instants \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infect is\u00a0all about getting into the red zone and trying to g<br \/>\net a quick kill via pump spells. \u00a0Turn 2 and 3 kills are not particularly rare if your opponent has no interaction. If you&#8217;ve got some combination of 2 <\/span><b>Might of Old Krosa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/<\/span><b>Groundswell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plus a <\/span><b>Mutagenic Growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you&#8217;re sitting on 10 poison waiting to happen. These all do basically the same thing: give you +2\/+2 unless you m<br \/>\neet a specific criteria, in\u00a0which case you get +4\/+4 and\/or some form of protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Non-Instants \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of our pump spells function differently, but they all serve to make our other pumps even better. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Llanowar Augu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r is a creature that can be played turn one when a glistener elf or mana dork isn\u2018t available to give a boost and trample later.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Revenge of\u00a0the Hunted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is doing it&#8217;s best impression of <\/span><b>Become Immense<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but with Trample. \u00a0You never want <\/span><b>Revenge of the Hunted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your opening hand, but you&#8217;re always thrilled to see it the turn after you play an infect creature. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Wild Defiance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the only non-instant on this list that&#8217;s also in the U\/G infect list, and it is amazing when it&#8217;s online. \u00a0Your creatures are virtually immune to the burn spells of the format, and games typically end very quickly after <\/span><b>Wild Defiance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resolves.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5450 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/theendgamesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Wild-Defiance-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wild Defiance\" width=\"200\" height=\"271\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5446 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/theendgamesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Revenge-of-the-Hunted-1-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"Revenge of the Hunted (1)\" width=\"201\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So there&#8217;s the theory behind the deck, let&#8217;s see how it works in practice:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Match 1 - Mono-Green Infect vs Grixis Twin\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Eky7J99J8ec?list=PLiEzHmUcHafPDOJbkb5QYox1qFeGvg8XR\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3-1 is not a bad showing considering the decks we played against and some of the glaring misplays on my part. Mono-Green Infect definitely has the chops to compete at a Friday Night Magic level event. \u00a0It&#8217;s not going to have the resilience of it&#8217;s U\/G counterpart, but we&#8217;re trying to end games on turn 2 for less than 100 dollars, so having a bit of a glass cannon feel isn&#8217;t the worst thing in the world. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A couple of notes on the sideboard. Between matches 1 and 2 I switched out <\/span><b>Guttural Response<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b>Autumn&#8217;s Veil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when I realized how much more expensive <\/span><b>Guttural Response<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on paper than it is on MTGO. <\/span><b>Naturalize<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the board is a mistake; \u00a0<\/span><b>Nature&#8217;s Claim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a 100% improvement, and is also extremely inexpensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Where do we go from here?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a large number of directions we can go to make this deck even better. \u00a0The biggest impact would probably come from adding <\/span><b>Noble Hierarch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5442 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/theendgamesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Noble-Hierarch-1-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"Noble Hierarch (1)\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/theendgamesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Noble-Hierarch-1-215x300.jpg 215w, http:\/\/theendgamesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Noble-Hierarch-1-108x150.jpg 108w, http:\/\/theendgamesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Noble-Hierarch-1.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/>nd\/or <\/span><b>Inkmoth Nexus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><b>Noble Hierarch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allows us to cast our two drops with mana up for protection and the exalted trigger eliminates the need for a mutagenic growth, allowing for a kill with only 2 pump spells. \u00a0<\/span><b>Inkmoth Nexus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also very good, as it has built in evasion, and dodges sorcery speed removal. \u00a0Other more budget options are <\/span><b>Gitaxian Probe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Rancor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0Any green fetchlands already in your collection could be easily added to the deck, which when coupled with <\/span><b>Gitaxian Probe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would help to enable <\/span><b>Become Immense<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is absolutely amazing in this deck and make <\/span><b>Groundswell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Final Note<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a great entry level Modern deck for someone looking to dip their toes in the format without diving in and spending a paycheck or more on a single deck and is a great stepping stone to a Tier 1 deck. \u00a0It&#8217;s a little fragile, but lightning fast, and can be built on a very tight budget <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(which can be cut in half by using <\/span><\/i><b><i>Giant Growth or Titanic Growth<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of <\/span><\/i><b><i>Might of Old Krosa)<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Total cost on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theendgames.co\" target=\"_blank\">www.TheEndGames.co<\/a> for the above decklist: <\/span><b>$72 with sideboard<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>If you have suggestions or ideas for a deck you&#8217;d like to see featured, feel free to let me know in the comments below or by emailing to nuckster00@gmail.com.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Hey fellow Cardboard Magicians.
